Has the Traditional Mobile DJ Had Its Day?

Spotify, playlists, Bluetooth speakers… do you actually need a DJ anymore?

It’s a fair question.

Pretty much everyone now carries thousands — if not millions — of songs around in their pocket.You can make a Spotify playlist, plug a phone or laptop into some speakers, hit shuffle and away you go.So why would you pay someone to DJ your wedding, birthday party or event?

Well…

If all you want is someone to press play on Spotify, you probably don’t need us.

Yep. We’re a DJ and entertainment company and we’ve actually just said that.

But there’s a reason.

Because playing music and entertaining a room full of people are two completely different things.

A DJ Isn't Just Someone Who Plays Music

There was a time when simply having access to a huge music collection was part of what made a DJ special.Those days are gone.You can have almost any song you can think of playing within seconds.

What Spotify can't do, however, is look at your dancefloor. It can't notice that the song everyone thought would be massive has actually started clearing the room. It can't see a group of people suddenly getting excited when a certain genre comes on and think:

Right… we're onto something here.

A good DJ can. That's the difference.

Reading a Dancefloor Is a Skill

One of the biggest misconceptions about DJing is that we turn up with a playlist we've used at every other party and work our way through it.

That's not how we work at Tykie Time Entertainment. Every crowd is different.

We've had songs we were convinced would fill a dancefloor completely flop.

We've also played songs we weren't expecting much from and suddenly watched everyone pile onto the floor.

That's when experience takes over.

You change direction.

You follow the crowd.

You build on what is working.

And sometimes you completely abandon whatever you'd originally planned.

That's part of the fun.

A professional DJ isn't just choosing the next song.

They're constantly watching what is happening in the room.

But I've Made a 100-Song Playlist…

Great!

Seriously.

We actually like customers telling us what they love.

Your playlist tells us loads about you and the sort of party you're hoping to have.

But here's the problem.

A brilliant collection of songs isn't necessarily a brilliant night.

Five hours of music can look fantastic written down.

Then real people arrive. Grandparents. Kids. Friends. Work colleagues.

That uncle who hasn't danced since 1997 but suddenly decides tonight is the night.

And, of course, the person who approaches the DJ every eleven minutes asking whether we've got their request yet.😂

That's where a DJ earns their money.

Not by ignoring your playlist — but by understanding it and making it work with the people who are actually standing in front of us.

Sometimes the Best DJ Decision Is NOT Playing a Request

Requests are brilliant.

We love them. But there is a big difference between taking requests and blindly playing every request.

Picture this.

The dancefloor is packed.

Everyone is singing.

The atmosphere is absolutely flying.

Then someone asks for a song that is completely different from everything that's currently working.

Do we immediately play it because somebody asked?

Probably not. We'll remember it. We'll look for an opportunity. And if we think it'll work later, we'll get it in.

Because sometimes the DJ's job isn't knowing what to play.

It's knowing when to play it.

And occasionally…

when not to play it at all.

The Party Has Changed

This is where we think the traditional idea of a mobile disco actually has changed.

People increasingly want more than some flashing lights and five hours of music.

They want an experience.

That's one of the reasons Tykie Time Entertainment has grown beyond simply offering discos.

Depending on the event, we can now bring things together such as:

• Disco and DJ entertainment

• Karaoke

• Music bingo

• Silent disco

• Photo booths

• Audio guestbooks

• Video guestbooks

• Graze/Sweet Carts

• Games and interactive entertainment

• Children's entertainment

• Party packages combining several different services

It means an evening doesn't necessarily have to follow the traditional:

DJ starts → music plays → buffet → more music → everyone goes home.

We can create something around the people who are actually coming.

Not Everyone Wants to Dance for Five Hours

And that's absolutely fine.

This is another thing the entertainment industry sometimes forgets.

A successful party isn't measured solely by whether 100% of the room spends the entire evening on the dancefloor.

Some people love dancing.

Some love karaoke.

Some will disappear into the photo booth with their mates.

Some want to sit and chat.

Some will become ridiculously competitive during music bingo.

Some children will happily dance for hours while some adults wouldn't get on a dancefloor if you paid them.

A great event gives people different ways to enjoy themselves.

That's why we increasingly think of ourselves as providing entertainment, rather than simply providing a disco.

And Yes — Sometimes We'll Turn a Booking Down

This might sound like a strange thing for a business to admit.

But we don't believe every enquiry should automatically become a booking.

Sometimes we'll talk to somebody about their event and realise we're simply not the right fit.

And we'll say so.

We would rather be honest than take somebody's money just because it's available.

Because ultimately, it's your event.

Whether it's a wedding, birthday, children's party, anniversary, corporate event or huge New Year's Eve celebration, you've probably spent weeks or months organising it.

We might only physically be there for a few hours.

But those few hours matter.

We want you to look back and think:

“That was a bloody good night.”

Not:

"Well… the DJ turned up."

There's a massive difference.

So… Has the Traditional Mobile DJ Had Its Day?

Maybe.

If by traditional mobile DJ you mean someone who turns up, puts two speakers on stands, switches some lights on and spends five hours simply playing songs…

then perhaps it has.

Technology can do an awful lot of that now.

But if you're talking about somebody who can read a room, interact with people, change direction when something isn't working, take requests, manage the atmosphere and help turn a room full of individuals into a party?

We don't think that DJ is going anywhere.

In fact, Bridebook's UK Wedding Report 2026 found that younger Gen Z couples are showing a stronger preference for DJs over live reception music.

Maybe the DJ isn't disappearing after all.

Maybe people's expectations of what a DJ should actually bring to an event are simply getting higher.

And we're absolutely fine with that.

More Than Just a Disco

But the DJ who thinks turning up with two speakers and a playlist is enough probably has.
